“So, what did your family have to say about me?” Ethan asked that night when they spoke on the phone. “Did they say I swish? Did they brand me as a faggot?”

“Practically,” Darrin admitted. “Nobody used the words ‘swish’ or ‘faggot,’ but Aunt Iris noticed your rainbow Pride sticker. I didn’t think she’d know what it was, but she did. She’s sharper than I gave her credit for—at least about stuff like that. They gave me a whole lecture about how I was leaving myself open to be tarred with the same brush, and how it wouldn’t be good for me or for the store.”

“What did you say?”

“I told them what a wonderful person you are. It didn’t matter.” He gave a long, discouraged sigh. “I think I was born into the wrong family.”

“Switched at birth?” Ethan chuckled.

“I’m glad you think it’s funny,” Darrin said with a snort.

“Believe me, I don’t.”

“I’m concerned that if they find out I’m gay, they’ll not only cut me off from ownership of the store but even cut off communication with me altogether. I don’t think they’d go that far—but Dad’s such a bigot when it comes to gays, that there’s no telling. There’s times I’m not proud to be a member of that family to begin with, given what Dad’s attitudes are, but he is the only father I’ve got—and the only parent I’ve got left.”

Thursday evening, Darrin got off work early and cooked dinner for Ethan. It was a simple enough dinner but amply tasty. He got a nice piece of pork and studded it with cloves of garlic, adding sage, thyme, salt, and pepper, and roasted it for an hour. Continuing with the garlic theme, he prepared a dish of spinach in a cream and parmesan sauce with garlic slices, and since the spinach dish was so rich, he decided on a simple potato dish to round out the dinner. He made potatoes Anna, sliced potatoes dotted with butter and lightly salted and peppered, and cooked in a casserole in the oven for an hour.

When Ethan came over, he kissed Darrin hello and said, “I hope I’m in the right house. If I’m not, I’m staying anyhow. It smells too good for me to leave. What is it?”

“Pork roast with garlic. Shall I get you a glass of cider?”

“I think I want something less sweet. What else have you got?”

“Vodka?”

“What have you got for a mixer?”

“Orange juice, tomato juice, or club soda.”

“Let’s try the OJ.”

“I’ll have one of those myself. Be right back.” Darrin ducked into the kitchen to fix the two drinks and returned shortly.

“How soon is dinner?” Ethan asked.

“Another forty-five minutes or so.”

“Do we have time to fool around first, or do you need to be in and out of the kitchen?”

“The potatoes and meat are good on their own, but I need to be in the kitchen for the spinach in about half an hour.”

“Then what are we waiting for?”

Darrin was a bit concerned that the
